Microfilm:
The film used for this transcript was of poor quality which added to the difficulty of deciphering the handwriting. Where a decision on the correct spelling of an entry could not be made the interpretation from an earlier transcript (Papers of H C M Norris) has been used.
Errors:
Because of the lack of knowledge of the recording clerk and misunderstandings resulting from dialects/accents the original roll contained errors. These have been retained in this transcript.
Personal Names:
In some cases surname spellings will be incorrect and some men will, also, have incorrect first names.
Place Names:
Many parish names cannot be identified or are different in spelling from that known today. Several entries appear with differing spellings for the same name as this is how they were recorded in the roll. County names have been left as originally recorded e.g. Stafford or Staffordshire.
Date of Enrolment:
The first enlistment for the 4th regiment was 18 Jan 1864 although the roll did not show a year date for the majority of the entries. Men who transferred from other regiments will appear in the roll with their earlier enlistment date.
Marriage Status:
The marriage status should not be relied on. Many are stated incorrectly for reasons that cannot be determined.
Age at Enrolment:
Some ages shown in the roll and the transcript are incorrect. The requirement for enrolment in the militia was that no man should be more than 40 years of age and there are several confirmed instances of a given age being reduced by up to 10 years to met this criteria.
