Many records of the time show the family name as Mullians.

At the time of his enrolment Joseph Mullions, his wife and family were in Australia as assisted immigrants. When they emigrated Joseph's parents (George and Martha) were both deceased. Caroline's parents were Robert, deceased, and Mary Gee who was living at Abbotsbury.

Joseph and his family arrived in Sydney, 5 December 1863 on the "Hotspur" which left Plymouth, England on 6 September.

Mary Mullions, aged 18, house servant
Joseph Mullions, aged 12, labourer
Charles Mullions, aged 10
Martha Mullions, aged 2

Another son, Harry, was also in Sydney two months later when both he and his father enlisted but he did not arrive with the family as an assisted immigrant.

On 6th Oct 1877, their youngest daughter, Martha, married Yelverton William O'Connell the eldest son of another militia man, Thomas Connell. This marriage followed soon after a court case relating to the couple's attempted elopement.

Joseph was granted a town lot (No.79) in Wellington Street, Hamilton East, between Grey and McFarlane Streets. Harry was granted a town lot (No.56) in Galloway Street, Hamilton East, between Cook and Wellington Streets. They each, also, received a 50 acre country block

In 1869 Harry married Eliza Jane Reed (probably the daughter of another militiaman). There were two men with the name Reed/Reid in the 4th Waikato - both were married and in their late thirties at the time of enlisting. His mother, Caroline, died 30 Aug 1875 and his father, Joseph, re-married 1 Jan 1878 to Annie Coulthard.

Joseph was a member of the Hamilton Borough Council in the 1880's with a group that included W H Pearce, William White and Edward McGarrigle. In 1889 Joseph and Harry were two of the fifty settlers who planted trees in Sydney Square, Hamilton East, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the militia's landing at Hamilton. In 1891 Joseph took over Kelley's bakery.
