Peter and his two eldest sons, Bernard and William, enlisted in the militia. With the rest of the family they came to New Zealand on the "Bella Marina". The others on board the "Bella Marina" were his wife Alice, two younger sons (aged 10 and 8) and six daughters ranging from 17 to 3 years of age. Ten years later one of the daughters, Alice, married Isaac Coates, a future councilor and mayor of Hamilton. Father and sons were, each, granted an acre in Firth, Galloway and Cook Streets, Hamilton East and 50 acre farm blocks. Peter Coleman died 29 Sep 1882, at his residence in Hobson Street, Auckland, aged 62 years.
