On 4 Feb 1865 Duncan Brown, a lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, received the captaincy in No. 2 Company of the 4th regiment vacated by Captain Mellish. He was a capable young officer and Colonel Moule was very satisfied with his appointment. He was, initially, placed in charge of the depot at Onehunga where some of the men were still awaiting relocation to Hamilton
His town acre was in Hood Street and his farm blocks totaling 300 acres were in Ohaupo Road, Rukuhia. When struck off pay, and despite the fact that he had no known previous experience of farming, he went to live on his farm block alongside Ohaupo Road, south of Hamilton and successfully brought this land into production.
Duncan married an English woman, Miss Rei Jolly, in 1868 but he was killed later that year while serving with the Armed Constabulary. After his death his wife returned to England and the farm was sold to R W Hammond who also purchased several other properties in the area.
